What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

  • Severe or persistent toothache.
  • A chipped, cracked or broken tooth.
  • A knocked-out tooth.
  • A dental abscess or swelling.
  • A lost filling or crown causing pain.
  • Wisdom tooth pain.
  • Excessive bleeding or jaw swelling.
  • Broken dentures or veneers.
  • Broken or loose braces causing injury.

If you are unsure whether it is an emergency, call us and we will assess urgency.

What to Do Right Now

Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root.
  • Rinse it gently without scrubbing.
  • Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it moist in milk or saliva.
  • Call us immediately. The sooner you are seen, ideally within 30 minutes, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Save any pieces you can.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Call us right away.

Severe Toothache or Swelling

  • Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed.
  • Call us. Swelling with fever or trouble breathing or swallowing needs urgent medical care, so go to the nearest emergency room.

What We Treat

Our team can relieve pain, repair damaged teeth and treat infection the same day when possible. Depending on your situation, that may include a root canal, an extraction or crown repair. Further treatment is quoted after your exam.

Same-Day Care

We reserve same-day slots for emergencies every day of the week. Call as early as possible on the day you need care so we can secure your appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.

Emergency Exam Offer

Our emergency exam and one X-ray are currently available for $25. Please ask our front desk for details.

What to Bring

  • Your insurance information, NIHB or CDCP details.
  • A list of your medications and allergies.
  • The tooth or broken piece, if you have it, kept moist.

Insurance and Payment

We offer direct billing to insurance, including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield Canada, Desjardins, Empire Life and Pacific Blue Cross. We accept NIHB for eligible First Nations and Inuit patients and are registered with the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Our team verifies your coverage before treatment so you know your costs upfront. Affordable payment plans are available, and walk-ins are welcome regardless of insurance status.

Emergency Dentist vs. Urgent Dental Care

Emergency care is for sudden trauma, severe pain, swelling or bleeding. Urgent dental care, such as root canal treatment or extraction, covers problems that need prompt treatment but are not sudden. Both are available here.

Why Choose Gardenbrooke Dental

  • Dr. Tanya Khattra, DDS, and our caring team.
  • Walk-ins welcome and same-day care.
